Every state and state-integrated school in New Zealand has a board. The board's core role is to govern its school.
Our school board is made up of five parent elected representatives, a staff elected representative and the principal. The current board took office in 2022.
The School Board is responsible for the governance of our school through setting the direction and meeting the legal and statutory requirements. This specifically includes the responsibility for implementing the Charter, setting and reviewing goals, implementing policies and assessing performance in relation to these. The principal, as chief executive, is charged with the responsibility of achieving these objectives through effective day to day management of the school’s staff and resources.
Board members are elected by the school’s community once every three years. Board meetings are 'meetings held in public' and are held twice per term, the dates of our meetings are on the school calendar. Please contact our board secretary if you would like to contact the board or to arrange to attend a meeting.
More information on the role of the board can be found here

Presiding Member
My partner Jarrod I have two boys – Cooper & Oliver. Cooper is in year three at VAS, and Oliver is a very excited New Entrant. I have been actively involved as a member of the VAS Friends Association, and a Class Parent since Cooper started in 2020.
I grew up in the South Island and studied at Otago, where I completed a Bachelor of Education. After doing an O.E, I moved to Auckland, which has now been home for 16 years.
I currently work for a publicly listed company that owns multiple subsidiaries specialising in recruitment. I’ve held leadership positions across the group, and I’m currently the General Manager of Operations – responsible for leading innovation and business improvement across our group. I am also a business owner, having recently opened a brand new hotel in Newmarket.
Away from work: My family is my heart and centre. You’ll see me on the side lines of Cooper & Oliver’s sports most weekends, heading out for a family bike ride or doing activities together. I enjoy baking all things sweet and exercise (debits and credits)!

Kia ora koutou, hello everyone, and 大家好!
As proud first-generation immigrants, my wife and I have called Auckland home for nearly 20 years. Our daughters, Tisha and Tamsin, are growing up under the beautiful skies of Aotearoa.
I am Chun Li, and it is a privilege to be re-elected as a Parent Representative and to serve as Deputy Chair of our School Board. Working collaboratively with the Board Chair, fellow trustees, the Principal, and school staff, I am committed to supporting initiatives that promote diversity, inclusivity, and excellence across our school community.
My passion for education has guided my professional journey for more than 15 years through both academic study and industry experience. Beyond my professional role, I am dedicated to contributing positively to education through MBA studies, mentoring university and college students, and volunteering with local schools and international NGOs.
Outside of work, my family and I enjoy the rich culture and beautiful landscapes of Aotearoa.

Hello, Nihao, Kia Ora, Annyeonghaseyo, Namaste! My name is Jason Cheng, and I am excited and honoured to be elected as a member of the board of trustees for Victoria Avenue School.
I am a proud father of two amazing children and our family has been part of this wonderful school community for several years now, and it truly feels like a second home. I am actively involved in school life. I coach one of the school’s basketball team and I love training with our young players and seeing them grow, have fun, and work together as a team. I have also co-organised a number of school events, including serving as MC for the popular Lantern Festival Carnival — a joyful celebration that brings our community together through culture and connection.
Professionally, I am a Senior Manager and Chartered Accountant at one of the Big Four global consulting firms, where I co-lead a large team of professionals. I advise both multinational enterprises and local Kiwi businesses on tax, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting matters.
I have also had the privilege of supporting various non-profit organisations with their compliance and governance needs, often on a pro bono basis — something I’m very proud of.
Academically, I hold a Bachelor of Management Studies from Waikato University and a Master of Taxation Law (Hons) from Auckland University. I am currently planning to purse a Juris Doctor degree in Law at Auckland University.
I care deeply about our school, our students, and the wider parent community. I am committed to bring a thoughtful, collaborative, and transparent approach to governance — one that reflects our shared values and puts students at the centre of every decision. I make a genuine effort to be approachable and available to other parents. I speak both English and Chinese and am committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where all families feel seen and heard. With my commercial and leadership experience, I bring strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills to the table.
I am committed to making a positive impact on the future of all VAS students. Thank you!

Kia ora, I’m Peter Dong, dad of two (Austin is in Year 3; our youngest will join VAS). I moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2000 and did all my schooling here.
As a Board member, I'm working to uphold our strengths in reading, writing and maths, and to keep technology learning up to date with AI. I want every learner to excel in the basics and feel confident using technology.
As a parent, I care about everyday progress and real classroom needs—device use, access to resources, and teacher confidence.
I’m committed to supporting the Principal, staff, and all school stakeholders wherever I can.
Ngā mihi nui.

I grew up in Auckland on the beautiful and sunny North Shore. I am a proud mother of two children currently attending Victoria Avenue School. I understand the local educational landscape intimately, as I work as a teacher at a nearby Intermediate School. As a family we love spending time at the beach and relish anything outdoors. When not watching my children participating in sports and dance, I enjoy indulging my creative side through my passion for baking and decorating beautiful cakes.
